SWOT analysis utilisation in HR marketing

We all probably know that SWOT analysis is one of the very useful tools that HR managers can use. This method, originally developed for strategic planning in companies, is becoming important in HR marketing. It would be a good idea to include a SWOT analysis before starting HR marketing activities, as it allows us to compare ideas and discover opportunities or gaps that were missed before. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how a SWOT analysis can strengthen your recruitment efforts.

What is a SWOT analysis?

SWOT analysis is a framework that allows businesses to assess their strengths and weaknesses, as well as opportunities and threats. As a rule, the strengths and weaknesses are within the organization and the opportunities and threats are brought about by the external environment. In conjunction with HR marketing, a SWOT analysis allows an organization to identify key areas where it should focus its efforts to attract new talent and motivate and retain employees.

1. Strengths

One of the key objectives in HR marketing is to engage potential talent. SWOT analysis can help identify an organization’s strengths that give it a competitive advantage. Examples of strengths include an excellent company culture, attractive employee benefits, innovative career development, or outstanding leadership and management. 

Taken specifically, this could be, for example, that the company does not delay payroll, that it gives a transportation allowance, or that it subsidizes its employees’ meals. It is important to be aware of all the strengths and present them to the public.

2. Weaknesses

Weaknesses in HR marketing can prevent an organization from achieving its goals of attracting and retaining talent. These may include gaps in employer brand perception, lack of investment in employee development, difficulties with internal communication, or insufficient attention to working on company culture. 

Specifically, for example, a poorly built career site that is not user-friendly and candidates may be unable to submit a contact form or it is so complicated that they don’t even fill it out. Or unattractive job adverts containing clichés such as “stable job in a stable company, attractive salary, etc.”, lack of benefits compared to competitors, or poor working environment.

3. Opportunities

The external environment presents many opportunities for organizations to strengthen their recruitment efforts. These include the growing demand for certain skills in the labor market, opportunities to expand into new markets, changes in employee-related legislation, or the development of new technologies to improve recruitment and retention processes. 

A practical example would be the introduction of recruitment and human resource management software that uses artificial intelligence to analyze CVs and identify the best candidates for positions in the organization. This technology can increase the efficiency of the recruitment process and reduce the time and costs associated with manually searching and evaluating candidates.

4. Threats

As well as opportunities, threats in the external environment can affect an organization’s ability to attract and retain talent. These may include changes in the competitive environment, an economic recession, the loss of key employees to competing offers, or changes in employee expectations and preferences. 

For example, continuous employee turnover can be a significant threat to an organization. High employee attrition rates can lead to recruitment and training costs, loss of know-how, and reduced productivity. Thus, a company should emphasize keeping its employees happy.

SWOT analysis is a powerful tool that can help us strengthen our recruitment and retention of talent. It helps to identify the key factors that influence HR marketing and allows you to develop strategies aimed at maximizing success. For organizations looking to gain a competitive advantage in the job market, SWOT analysis is an important element of strategic planning.
